October Ukulele Jam – Last one of the year!

Get ready for the October Ukulele Jam—join us this Saturday, October 25 from 4 to 6 as we sing and strum the ukulele.

All the songs are in Jim Beloff’s Daily Ukulele book (Yellow Book), and the Leap Year Edition (Blue Book). If you’d like your own copy, we have the book available for sale in our Ukulele Shop.

Mike Keale In Concert, October 10

Join us as Hawaii’s Mike Keale brings his special brand of aloha and music to our Ukulele Academy stage.

Keale, first cousin of legendary Israel Kamakawiwo’ole (Braddah Iz) and the nephew of Moe Keale (musician and Hawaii 5-0 actor), carries on his family’s tradition of heartfelt, soulful music of the islands.

He has been honored to be nominated for two Na Hoku Hanohano Awards (think ‘Grammys’ of Hawaii)- Most Promising Artist and Island Music Album of the Year.

Mike’s music and amazing voice have the power to transport an audience to the tropical shores of his native Hawaii. We are honored to have him share his gifts on our Academy stage.

Join us for an evening of traditional Hawaiian music, island favorites and Keale’s rich Hawaiian tones.

Sarah Maisel & Craig Chee in Concert

We have a very special duo performing on our stage… ukulele masters, Sarah Maisel & Craig Chee.

They’ll be teaching two workshops, followed by a concert on Saturday, September 6th.

Sarah Maisel, hailed as the “Queen of Jazz Ukulele” by international music critics, has taken the world by storm and strum. She has performed at ukulele festivals in England and Australia and around the US. And she loves to teach ukulele as much as she loves to play.

Craig Chee of Hawai’i has studied under Jake Shimabukuro and Troy Fernandez. His lively style and impressive skill have made him a favorite among ukulele lovers. He loves to share his passion for ukulele through teaching workshops and through his albums.

Sarah and Craig will be performing together jazz classics, beautiful originals and feats of ukulele prowess that will send you off to another world.

Take your senses on an afternoon trip to the Hawaiian islands. Kent Knorr, instructor at the North Carolina Ukulele Academy, brings the aloha to you with a ukulele performance that presents the instrument’s history in song. Ever wonder who created the first ukulele? Ever wonder how it caught on in Hawaii and beyond? Follow the ukulele’s royal history-from its humble origins to its rumbling rise throughout the mainland in the early twentieth century and finally, to the new talents and trends of today. Kent will share the entertaining story of the uke through the ages and accompany it with lively music from each era.  

Check out a display of over 50 vintage and collectible ukuleles.  Kent Knorr is the founder of the North Carolina Ukulele Academy, in Wilmington. Established in 2007, it’s the only academy and ukulele store of its kind in the region. Offering all levels of ukulele instruction, the academy focuses on the spirit of aloha while teaching people to make their own music and share it with their family, or ohana.  Join Kent for a musical ukulele journey through history.

The V-Tones Are Lighting Up Our Stage!

We’re excited to welcome back an amazing and UN-forgettable trio of musicians to our stage on Friday, July 25th, The V-Tones. Powerful and quirky, cool, classic and like nothing you’ve ever seen, The V-Tones wow crowds with hypnotically rhythmic post-Modern Ragtime, Gypsy, Jazz, Swing and Jugband music. What could make this musical adventure even more fabulous? How about a tap-dancing leading lady with a great set of pipes and sizzling style?

More about the UKULELE WORKSHOP WITH NOODLE

Learn tricks and techniques that will take your basic ukulele playing to the next level! Noodle McDoodle, avid ukulelian and grand poo-bah behind the V-Tones of Charleston, will share strumming tricks, chord substitutions and knowledge that’ll help you improve and enhance your ukulele playing. Noodle likes to convey his information in the context of a song, so be prepared to absorb what you can, and then apply it to your own style and genre.

Noodle has taught ukulele during workshops at The North Carolina Ukulele Academy, at Augusta Heritage Swing Week, Hungry Monks Music School, and at the Blackwater Ukulele Festival.

We welcome UNC-TV & North Carolina Weekend

The Ukulele Academy will be featured on UNC-TV  Thursday, April 9th at 9pm and Friday April 10th  on their show, North Carolina Weekend.

Del Rey Concert & Workshop, Apr. 30

Ukulele powerhouse, Del Rey, from Seattle, Washington, is one of the most dynamic players of country, blues and ragtime today. Her stylings on fingerpicked guitar and ukulele leave jaws dropped at the end of her shows – she is truly a treasure to behold. Del Rey is a rare ukulele talent, not to be missed. She’ll only be playing two dates in North Carolina. One is her appearance at MerleFest, the other is on our stage at the Ukulele Academy. And, we have the added privilege of full access to this ukulele master via a lively workshop led by Del herself. Join us!

Award-winning singer/songwriter, Victoria Vox will be onstage with her ukulele at the Academy for a rousing concert. She’ll play a full show of refreshing, heartfelt, original tunes. It will be an intimate night of songs and the stories behind them.

About Victoria Vox:

For the past ten years Victoria Vox has been performing and honing her songwriting craft on the ukulele. Touring both nationally and internationally, Victoria has found acclaim from fans and critics alike. In 2012 she crowd-funded the 52 Original Song Project, taking a full year to write and record a song a week. Her eighth album, Key, was released in the spring of 2013 and features 11-tracks created during the Original Song Project.

Victoria also made an appearance on the Jay Leno Show in December of 2009 to display her unique talent of playing mouth trumpet, that is, recreating spot on trumpet sounds only using her mouth. For more information on Victoria’s music and upcoming events, visit her website>>.

It’s time for 2014’s very first Ukulele Academy Strummers Group monthly jam —join us this Saturday, January 25th. The strumming begins at 4:00 and goes until 6:00 at 203 Racine Drive, Suite 205, in Wilmington, NC.
