January 2014 Monthly Ukulele Jam

Posted January 22, 2014

Aloha, ukulele lovers!

It’s time for 2014’s very first Ukulele Academy Strummers Group monthly jam —join us this Saturday, January 25th. The strumming begins at 4:00 and goes until 6:00 at 203 Racine Drive, Suite 205, in Wilmington, NC.

Get ready to have fun: it doesn’t matter if you’re an expert or just learning, everyone’s welcome here. And as always, come ready to enjoy some refreshing refreshments while you strum.

The songs for this month’s jam can be found in the Daily Ukulele book by Jim Beloff. If you’d like your own copy, we have the book available for sale in our Ukulele Shop. And this month, we’re also playing some songs from the Daily Ukulele Leap Year Edition.

This month’s songs are…

(from Daily Ukulele):
– Auld Lang Syne (Key of C), pg 286

– Far Away Places (Key of D), pg 79

– The Letter (Key of Em), pg 149

– Down in the Valley (Key of D), pg 69

(from Daily Ukulele Leap Year Edition):

– Take Me Home Country Roads (Key of F), pg 340

– Good Riddance (Key of D), pg 129

– Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive (Key of C), pg 14

– Octopus’s Garden (Key of C), pg 268

As always, we want to play music that you’ll enjoy–if you have a song you’d like everyone to jam on, bring along 20 printed copies and we’ll all give it a try.

Hope to see you at the jam on Saturday!

Christmas Workshop was Merry & Bright!

Posted January 2, 2014

Thanks to everyone who joined our Ukulele community at the North Carolina Ukulele Academy for the 2013 Christmas Music Workshop. Beginners and experts alike added some holiday jingle to their repertoires (all while enjoying hot apple cider, coffee and the fresh baked graham cracker brownies that Kent’s nearly famous for.)

Did you miss it? Awww…well, all’s not lost. Get our workshop book, Christmas Ukulele, Hawaiian Style and get strumming! Maybe it’s a little too early to start thinking about next year’s Christmas workshop but, hey, at least promise yourself to add ‘more ukulele playing’ to your list of New Year’s resolutions.

Mele Kalikimaka and happy holidays to everyone from all of us at the North Carolina Ukulele Academy!

Hawaii’s Mike Keale in concert

Posted September 5, 2012

Keale_2012Join us as Hawaii’s Mike Keale brings his special brand of aloha and music to our Ukulele Academy stage.

Keale, first cousin of legendary Israel Kamakawiwo’ole (Braddah Iz) and the nephew of Moe Keale (musician and Hawaii 5-0 actor), carries on his family’s tradition of heartfelt, soulful music of the islands.

Last year, he was honored to be nominated for two Na Hoku Hanohano Awards (think ‘Grammys’ of Hawaii)- 2011 Most Promising Artist and 2011 Island Music Album of the Year.

Mike’s music and amazing voice have the power to transport an audience to the tropical shores of his native Hawaii. We are honored to have him share his gifts on our Academy stage.
